It is essential that you validate all of the ideas that you have for Udemy courses. Too many Udemy instructors have an idea and then dive right in to create the course. They then end up disappointed because the course doesn’t sell well.
It is essential that there is sufficient demand for your Udemy courses. Without this you will never make much money. You might be an expert in a particular subject and can create the best online training course ever for it, but if nobody wants to learn about your subject then it is all a waste of time.

Market Research

Researching the market properly can really mean the difference between success and failure with Udemy. OK you may get lucky by guessing but it really isn’t worth taking the chance. With some simple market research you can easily identify the best opportunities for new Udemy courses.
There are a number of tools that you can use for this research and many of them are free. We are going to discuss two of the best tools for research that you can use a little later on in this article.
Once you have validated a course idea using the methods below, you need to find out as much as you can about your target audience. This will give you a significant advantage as you will know what they are looking for and be able to provide it.

Google Keyword Planner

One very good way of assessing demand for a subject is to use the free Google Keyword Planner to see how many searches there are on the Google search engine each month for keywords (search terms) related to the subject.
It is very easy to test your Udemy course ideas one by one using this method. You just need to think about a main keyword that best describes the idea and then enter it into the Google Keyword Planner to see what the monthly search volume is. So if you have an idea for a dog training course then enter “dog training” and see what results you get.
You want your main keyword to have at least 1,000 to 10,000 searches per month. Any less than this and you could be wasting your time. Another good thing about the Google Keyword Planner is that it will provide you with a list of related keywords that you can use for course content or even further courses.

Udemy Insights

Udemy have introduced a great free tool to assess ideas for new courses called Udemy Insights. All you need to do to use this great tool is to enter in your main keyword like you did with the Google Keyword Planner and you will receive some very interesting information about your idea.
Udemy Insights will tell you what the student demand is for your course idea. This ranges from very high to low presented graphically so you will see this immediately. Udemy Insights will also tell you what the most searched keywords are for the subject on their platform which is very useful information.
You can also use Udemy Insights to get an overview of the competition. Competition is a good thing as it shows there is demand. You can see the top competing courses for your idea and the amount of competition that you have.
